COVID vaccines lead to milder disease in rare breakthrough infections: CDC study

If individuals who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 do become infected, they tend to have milder illness compared to people who have not been vaccinated, suggests a new US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

Investigators assessed over 3,900 essential workers and noted that fully vaccinated people are over 90% protected against COVID-19 infection. Additionally, it was noted that partially vaccinated individuals had an 81% lesser likelihood of becoming infected compared to those who have not been vaccinated. The data from the study add to the real-world evidence of vaccine effectiveness.

The study that included healthcare staff, first responders and other frontline essential workers, tested weekly since December, noted that 5% of them had tested positive for coronavirus thus far. Only 16 of the 204 individuals who contracted the infection had been inoculated… (CNN, June 8, 2021)
